Basic Phases of Project Management

Different viewpoints emerge on the number of phases that rise during the course of a project. Some may claim that it is 3, while others say it is 5. The net result is that it is determined by the type of course and the team that is working on it. The basic idea of a project is that it goes through various phases or a set of activities that deal from planning to conception.

The phase of project initiation – The idea of the course will be carefully examined to determine whether it benefits the organization or not. A decision making team carefully examines the facts and figures on whether the project can be realistically committed on time or not. The important stakeholders and the course sponsor come on a common platform to determine the feasibility of the course. This tends to depend upon the industry involved as in case of information technology, requirement gathering and analysis are performed here.

The definition of the project and planning – A comprehensive project management plan is developed and individual plans for resource, cost and risks are formulated. The scope of the course is undertaken in writing specifying the work that needs to be performed. At this stage a team tends to segregate the course on the important areas of priority, craft a budget along with a schedule. In the final analysis what resources are needed for achieving the same needs to be clearly defined.

The execution phase of the project – After a project deliverable is constructed and completed, with the aid of a mapped plan. The resources tasks are disturbed among the team members and each one of them is informed well in advance of their expected responsibilities. It is indeed a good time to bring forth the important information related to the project. It is such phase of a course which will clearly help you to understand on whether your project is a success or a failure.

The monitoring of the project and the control phase – Both of them tend to occur at the phase of execution. The managers with the course will compare the status of the project and relate to the progress of the actual plan. It is more often than not the resources tend to perform the scheduled work. The common trend that is observed here is that course managers normally tend to adjust the schedule and confirm whether everything is on track or not.

Closure of the project – After all the tasks related to the project has been completed, and the client has give their thumbs up to the outcome, a detailed evaluation is necessary to determine whether the project has been a success or failure and learn from the course history.
